Anjan-da,
This is news to me - but I heard Sri RaviShankar in an ornate hall at Harvard alongwith speakers from Islam, Christianity and Jewish faith (Judaism.) They talked about Faith and service. RaviShankar has a melodious way of putting things and seems well grounded inanswering questions. They did not talk about myths but a Catholic priest did speak positively about path of service by Krishna, Ram, Janak and Buddha in India - he spoke as if he really believed they were historical figures.

Umesh,Yes, we do talk of the Christian myths like Noah's Ark. Even Jesus is considered a myth and an archetypal man.I can give you a whole lot of reading material on Jesus and the Christian myths. There is a scholarly work on this subject and was quite popular a few years ago.Anjan_______________________________________________----- Original Message -----From: umesh sharmaSent: Monday, May 16, 2005 5:17 PMSubject: Re: [Assam] [Yoga Sutras of Patanjali] ECK--From where a Harvard Professor gothet surname --BIOCHEMISTRY OF CONSCIOUSNESSAnjan-da,Maybe your research topic was mythology in western faiths, but I don't hear generally people talking about mythology in Christainity of Islam --the way they spout openly about Hindu "myths""No one talks of mythology in Islam, Judaism or Christianity though."Oh yes, we do.Mythological and Archetypal criticism in literature looks at all mythologies including the above. I did my Ph.D. on the subject and I should know. You can read Northrop Frye's books on the subject especially The Great Code and The Secular Scripture.Anjan----- Original Message -----From: umesh sharmaSent: Monday, May 16, 2005 9:24 PMSubject: [Assam] [Yoga Sutras of Patanjali] ECK--From where a Harvard Professor gothet surname --BIOCHEMISTRY OF CONSCIOUSNESSHi,While reading this article I hit upon a familiar word - a surname of one of our top professors Diana Eck. http://www.eckankar.org/ This webiste reveals her interest in Eastern spirituality. Now I realize that perhaps her course titled "Hindu Mythology" is such becos she is able to differentiate (sift the grain from the chaff) from Indian/Hindu religious literature/practices--and not becos she is biased. She did nod her head favorably, on my comment in the seminar on "wfie abuse and faith" that all religions have mythical characeters (as per our current knowledge) then why single out non-Western faiths as "Hindy mythology".Noone talks of mythology in Islam, Judaism or Christianity though.Umesh
