Am sorry if my message gave an indication of some prying. No. It is to bring out information of a socio-economic kind from which a major survey can come about. Someone from the area/local college/school should do it. The one I am planning in my place (the local youth Sahitya Sabha members have not responded to my request yet) would go like this. The nuber of families in the village, families living outside, members and their education, employment status, income per capita roughly measured, vehicle, land owned, some write up on business, schools, colleges, government scheme etc so that the outsider can gauge what type of village this is.
So there is nothing about the corruption at the first glance. But indirect benefit will be apparent. No education, no business, no land but a car and huge income. Corruption income is normally from government schemes. More information on what is going on in the area would help civil societies take up issues. Who would know how many people would be displaced by the Pagladia project if nobody has a base line survey -done by the local people? Who would know that a huge farm house near Hajo belongs to one of the TEL-chhor? One has to start somewhere. The benefits would come in the long run. It is easy to make good plans when the data are good and easily available. I have been requesting the NGOs/SHGs to give publicity to their good work and also have baselline surveys so that the impact can be evaluated.
Do keep in touch. Let us network and see how we can contribute to the devt of the region and Assam in particular. India is doing fine I should say.

>I read your article in ASA Newsletter (May issue) and your desire to make the readers conduct surveys in their locality -from time to time, whcih would help keep tabs on undue , unaccounted for flow of wealth . I think is a good suggestion but needs to be implemented effectively over a long period of time - and need some dedicated volunteers.

For instance, I have been staying in my locality for 25 years and people indeed have gronw rich, some by illegal means too -- but I cannot pry into their affairs and be a good neighbor at the same time. Even if I did, how can I bring them to the book, since the rich always have contact with powerful people?
