I agree Mridul.
Of course good communication skills are essential in this
connected world of today. But lack of it is not to be construed as
lack of leadership abilities.
BK also explained that well.

Even if the netters might not agree, I don't think there is any doubt about the leadership quality of Hiteswar Saikia, Prafulla Mahanta etc. What they lack is speaking in fluent correct english, but they are good speakers in Assamese. There are instances of other chief ministers, who never speaks in english like Karunanidhi, Jayalalita, the current Andhra Pradesh CM etc.and yet doing well in the leadership front. However, I am not in anyway trying to say that the ability to speak fluently in english doesn't help in improving the communication skills.

Whether Hiteswar Saikia, or Prafulla Mahanta or Tarun Gogoi, it simply reflects badly on the whole Assamese society when one find the CM cannot look at the camera while speaking, nothing else. We cannot hide by trying to put the blame on something else. A society gets the leader it deserves. (You may say thanks to the faulty Indian electorate system, and live in your own world.)

To be a good leader one need to speak well unless one is a super leader like Gandhi who could communicate and lead well without being a good public speaker. Even then a leader like Gandhi did practice public speaking in London where, if you remember, he 'conceived' three times. Almost all political leaders even in this country undergo some type of public speaking course.

Assamese leaders also need to learn to speak in Hindi well to compete in India. Gopinath Bordoloi was a true Assamese leader who I think was of the stature of Nehru himself. Once Bhupen Hazarika told me how Gopinath Bordoloi once impressed everybody by speaking in fluent Hindi in a public meeting attended by thousands.

I have seen and starting for Hiteswar Saikia down through Prafulla Mahanta and to present Tarun Gogoi, all are the same. Partly this is because of their poor leadership qualities, lack of knowledge of things in general, lack of confidence and all that. I simply wonder how in the world they got into such leadership positions. I suggest all the future political party candidates in Assam should undergo some kind of minimum training in Public Speaking (like Toast Masters). The public also should demand more out of these leaders. This is defenitely a poor reflection of the present Assamese society. I wish if the Assamese public would have simply asked these leaders dumb questions!! But they don't.
