*** You have good reason to hold this view.
But let us not forget , WHERE the degeneration of 'secularism' in
public life in the Indian context began.
It began from the commissions and omissions of members of the
MAJORITY community, not the minorities.
*** Also, the fact that Hindus themselves , being as fractured as
they are ( it is however THEIR prerogative--why does a Southern Hindu
have to accept an Eastern Hindu as their compatriot--he being a
vegetarian, could not possibly comprehend the Hinduness of a
mas-khowa bongali or saagoli-khowa Kharkhowa, nominal Hindu), should
have the schutzpah to complain about the monolithic ( likely story!)
Muslims. If the fractured Hindu polity wants to play the bigotry
card against the Muslim minority, wouldn't you think they would have
the smarts to get their act together to build up that Hinduttwa
majority before they go the polls. And if they don't or can't, whose
fault would that be?

Cd, here is my simple explanation to your question--" How,in an
avowedly SECULAR democracy has a religious minority come to play
such an important role in governance?"
In India, while the minorities are organised around their book and
their prophets, the majority faith is totally unorganised. In fact,it
is unorganisable at all. With 33 crore Gods to be propitiated, one can
understand how impossible it is to organise Hinduism.Vote bank
politics have made it worse.Since the minorities are organised, they
become readymade vote banks. But the Hindu majority does not behave
or vote as majority. This is so even on issues of faith, as the
divergent faiths and Gods within Hinduism makes it difficult for
them to unite like minorities. It is a small wonder then, why Bihari
quipster Mr Paswan has been rooting for a Muslim chief minister in
Bihar. The word " secular" stinks to high heavens in India.KJD
