Today I had gone to the Harvard Career Froum, didn't see anyone fro our batchmates there. I think
it would have been useful exercise for international students - to whom the tips of job -hunting
they might have l! earnt back home -may not be in active memory. Besides tips on resume writing and
Interview there was a good inetractive workshop on Networking -where we learnt that about 80%
people get jobs thru networking.
There is a disticntion between Informational Interview and Newtworking Interview. Informational
Interview - only seeking info about the related field in general -and hoping that the interviewer
will take the initiative in offering a job opportunity in his/her organization.
Networking Interview - specifically mentioning that u like the job/project area the interviewer is
doing and would like to work with her. In the end always ask the interviewer for other people's
names who can help out.
There is an orgnanization in Cambridge area - WIND http://www.windnetworking.net/index.html
which is a useful resource - they help each other out. I too got a few leads in my area of
interest - I narrowed my interest with their help to very spec! ifically -- working with reform
programs in Hard to staff/teach K-12 schools for disadvantaged communities (includes being part of
the research project or teaching etc.)
After this excercise I feel charged -and armed with my new mobile phone 1-857-928-0174 I am ready
to exploit/support my allies/advocates/acquaintances for networking for jobs --either in Boston
area or DC area.
