C'da,

Thank you for that vote of confidence (at least this time).

What Umesh brought up may have been not understanding the situation
fully. IMHO the ULFA leadership have at least one thing going for them
- their tenacity.
As for governance, polititcians do not need to bring experience (it
helps) along. I too agree that they have the intelligence and the
smarts (that they have continued for 25 + years). But thats not the
issue here.

Now, having got that out of the way, I think those who are pro/against
this movement are divided on philosphical grounds.

But one would really like to know, what happens if the talks fail on
one particular condition: Sovereignty.

ULFA has always claimed that is the primary condition and will not
negotiate that condition away. Basically, they would like the talks to
center around the when and how of Assam's independence from India.

The pertinent question for Assam and Assamese would hover around what
if GOI does not agree to Assam's sovereignty?

I know, you will retort with "its not theirs to give etc etc". But
from ground realities, as India is more powerful (bad as you may want
to make her out to be), it has all the bargaining chips even before
the talks begin.

I do not think you will find any "2-bit general" in the GOI that has
no clue. Just like ULFA there are numerous GOI officials who can put
up enough intelligence to see things their way. I hope you don't think
they are all clueless in Delhi.
