GUWAHATI, June 30 Grand master and World Rapid Chess champion Viswanathan Anand today launched the NIIT Mind Champion Academys National Chess Championship at a function in the Don Bosco School auditorium here. Addressing the gathering, the champion of the brain game said that children who play chess always perform well in every aspects including their studies.
Thanking NIIT for their initiative in starting the competition all over the country, Anand said that the tournament wil help students sharpen their ability to concentrate, instill a spirit of competition and help country discover talented chess players in future. Adding, he said: NIITs presence in over 2500 schools, which touches the lives of over a million students, will help achieve the goal. I am glad NIIT is investing in popularising chess that could lead to stud! ents improving their scores in studies.
Speaking on the occasion, L Balasubramaniam, president NIIT, said that the NIIT Mind Champion Academys National School Chess Championship will initiate young minds on a path of excellence in academics as well as sports, as exemplified by Viswanathan Anand.
Over 20,000 youngsters from 700 schools from Assam and surrounding States are participating in the championship. Later, Anand took part in a rapid chess against a group 27 youngsters where Rajkumar Shrinjan Singha, who was the runners up in last years national championship after being the Zonal champ, and todays champion Rajib Dhar played up to 40 and 37 moves respectively. Later, Anand praised Shrinjan for his encouraging show. Shrinjan, Rajib and Debashis Dutta, runners-up of todays meet, were presented prizes in the function. P&D minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was also present at the function who thanked Anand for his visit to the State.
