Hi,
I am thinking of taking this advice from another Harvard Alum --about starting out as a Temperory employee - as I go about job searches - though I can only work in educational institutions.
Further, now I have begum to realize how networking is very different from nepotism - the main difference is that nepotism is meant to just help the candidate get ahead without regard to the employer's benefit -- whereas networking works to improve effectiveness of the organization by geting them the recommendations on behalf of candidates from peeople who know the candidate in a work situation - and the recommender would also stand to lose something if the candidate does not perform - maybe his reputation.
Nepotism works in situations where recommender has no accountability but lots of power over the employer -- mostly in govt departments or govt run univs which run on tax payer's money. Networking works for organizations which survive only becos they are effective. So even Professors recommending their graduates from private unvs stand to lose - if their students are not really good enough. If they recommend poor candidates then next year noone will heed their advice - and if their students do not get good jobs - their own position would be threatened --- similar to a placement agency.
Any views?
Umesh

If I can think of anything else, I will email. I forgot that you can now look on the internet for all international organizations. If I were you, I would go to the World Bank - there are a lot of Indians there. Make a lunch appointment with someone you may know there...the same for the International Monetary Fund (IMF), You probably know this.
If you do not mind working as a temp - ask the World Bank what temporary employment agencies they use and call the temporary agencies and tell them you would like to work at the World Bank or IMF and what you can do (computer skills, education skills). Working as a "temp" pays pretty well and it is a foot in the door. Who knows - if they hire you for an entry level job you would be able to stay in the USA if you like...and no taxes to pay the US government. I enjoyed Washington, DC very much and spend two decades there. Houston, TX is much cheaper to live and with an international population, lots of cultural like New York City, but you need a car (I think) to get around
