July 23, 2005 - NIT Silchar included in World Bank-assisted prog

Silchar, July 19 – The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar , the 18th NIT in the country and the first of its kind in the entire north-eastern region today stands on an equal footing with other premier institutions of the country in imparting technical education to the students.

Established in 1967 at Silchar in Barak Valley as the Regional Engineering College (REC) the college was transformed to NIT on June 28, 2002 on the basis of a report submitted by the members of High Power Joint Expert Committee and the University Grant Commission (UGC) and since then two batches of engineering graduates have received their B. Tech. Degree.

Prof R C Bhattacharjee, dean, academic affairs, NIT said that although the college was established in 1967 the cl***es in the present campus started in 1977 and in 1983 the first batch of engineering students p***ed out.

Initially the institution w! as financed by both the Assam government and the Central government for non plan activities and the plan expenditure. But as time p***ed many developmental activities of the college came to halt due to precarious financial position of Assam government . However after getting the deemed university status in 2002 fund flow of the institute improved and today it is trying to become one of the premier technological institutions of the country. 

The curriculum and the academic activities of the institute have been remodeled with the standard of the Indian Institute of Technology( IIT) and started awarding degrees to the students from 2002. Further with the wider vision of Prof Gautam Barua, chairman, NIT Silchar and support from the Union Ministry of Human Resources the institute have started M.Tech and Ph.D programme from 2004-05 session. In the current academic session apart from the three existing M.Tech programme the institute will introduce M.Tech in earthquake eng! ineering. Sanctioned strength in each of the programmes is 18 and students having GATE qualification will be provided scholarship as per the UGC norms.

Altogether 206 students were conferred with B. Tech degree at the third convocation held recently after they successfully completed their course in different stream. Santosh Mohan Deb, Union Minister, Heavy Industries attending the convocation as the chief guest said that the people of the Valley are peace loving and have devotion to academic pursuit. Looking at the academic talents the Central government has set up two academic institutions namely the Assam University popularly known as the Central University established by an Act of Parliament and the Deemed University in the form of NIT, the minister said adding that the two institutions have provided the students to prove their talents.

The UPA government has laid special emphasis on the development of NIT and the total budgetary grants of Rs 14.5 crore (approx.) for! the financial year 2004-05 have been increased to Rs 17 crore in the current financial year, the minister said and added that the NIT Silchar has been included in the World Bank ***isted “Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme.”
