If this has to be done, this is the most agreeable solution. I would
like to see one further options, disable it all, downloads, notify,
the entire thing, turn it all off.

I personally do not think that solving the problem of getting more
beta testers, and more people to be current can be solved with code.
This is not a code problem.

But since it looks like this feature is going to be added, the numbers
will eventually show that. I have a few questions...

What defines the url, and how do we know to trust the source of where
the download comes from? Now we have to look into adding code for
hash checking of the files. Trust of the integrity of the file is
going to be an issue. I have seen too many portfiles fail checksum
checks for a marginal glitch in my Internet connection. I download
again, all is well, without care, ASSP could get in a download loop.
More code.

Mr prediction, stats show there are a lot more downloads off all the
newest releases. As long as your stats show which versions are
actively being used, I suspect those numbers to not change much at all.

Were the original stats posted by Thomas download stats, or usage
stats? If they are usage stats, I assume that means ASSP phones home
in some way, are most people aware of this? I am ok with it, but I
certainly would like the option to be able to toggle that off if I was
asked to do so.

This also ads a layer of port maintenance to admins. Some of my email
servers are locked down, and I do not allow outbound on any other than
the ports I need to. I would now have to open port 80 in and out to
deal with software updates. Or I guess we can use some other port,
but ... More code.

Good to have this discussion though, I appreciate the chance to give
some feedback on this issue.
