IIRC, "Sender verify failed" may be because SF is using an anti-spam filter that verifies that you have an abuse@ address (or maybe its postmaster@) from your sending domain.  I believe that is what the sender verification is.

If SMTP is timing out inbound to his domain, then that could explain it.

Your mailserver is taking a long time to respond on port 25.  DNSreport.com fails with a timeout, 
and I was getting a 20 second wait.  SF may have a short timeout for checking valid list senders.

When that happens to me I usually find a rogue process hog or similar.
