I can tell you are a go daddy fan ;-) lol

Anyway, I agree with the IP address not matching the mx records. It is strange.
Postini seems to come as a result of the MX entries that are there. The reason
I know this is because at the end of the postini address in the fault email,
there is "(psmtp.com)". This is the server that you identified as the original
MX record. At first I did have it as you said, where the MX record was
"quantumtechnology.com.au.s8a2.psmtp.com", etc. When it is like that it
does EXACTLY the same thing as it does now with the IPs.

As for hosting my own DNS, I don't have much choice. The domain registrar
doesn't provide a DNS and I'm also not entitled to purchase it with them as
my client owns the name. The registrar only gives provision for us to change
name servers. The DNS it was pointing to before (and is again right now
temporarily)
is that for the old hosting company. Since they are still hosting the mail,
yes, it
probably is an option to talk with that company about using their DNS as well
and
only pointing web to mine. However that would lose a lot of flexibility for us
and that
company is really really bad at communication and hasn't been giving us a good
time
with anything recently. To be honest, I wish my client would just switch
completely but
they have strong ties and in that regard I understand why they stay. The
company is
their ISP,mail and web (for 3 websites) right now. If that is the only option,
I'll work on that
on Monday, but I'd prefer to have the added flexibility and also have this
sorted before Monday.

Another interesting note, the error comes from a range of servers from postini.
 Their
IPs/hostnames are all similar. Any idea how in the world one MX record can
result in a farm
of servers that might respond to your request? Do you think there is something
funny
with the mail servers where you can't pass mail to them unless you got the mx
record from that
company's server?

I'm really confused with all this.

Hmm can't say I've heard anything good about godaddy hosting.

Your issue is most likely caused by postini, my advice is to LEAVE the
MX records alone and just change the A record for the website to your
servers ip.

If you absolutely insist on hosting their DNS yourself I would then
advise you to simply duplicate the MX records as they are
"quantumtechnology.com.au.s8a2.psmtp.com" and not change them to your
own names.

I do find it interesting that the error came from "64.18.3.101" which
does not match any of your MX records.

Did you ask postini why you were getting that error?

P.S. - PLEASE PLEASE use that huge key on your keyboard labeled "Enter"
it makes those loooooooong lines not so long.

P.P.S - The MX record order term is "Preference" not "Priority", though
if thats the term godaddy uses....I'm not surprised they got it wrong :)
