I think I can rule out a dns issue for this particular problem.
I'm using linux, net::dns 0.59 and the problem can be triggered by one 
single big mail. There is no dns timout involved, the connection is open 
for around 3000 seconds from a whitelisted server/ip so there is no RBL 
check.

It looks really like the behaviour if ccMaxBytes is not set. But it's 
there in my config:
ccMaxBytes:=1
