Not quite. RFC 2821 supersedes RFC 821, agreed. However, STD 10 (which = RFC
821) is _STILL_ the official Standard for SMTP.

RFC 2821 is only a Proposed Standard. It hasn't even made it to the status
of a Draft Standard, never mind being ratified as an actual Standard. Thus,
RFC 821 is still the official SMTP Standard, despite being obsolete.

Go figure. I don't understand it either ...
