just as an example; the attached PNG diagram shows a possible
setup; there are two VMs running ASSP+SMTP+DNS acting as the
frontend MX servers, the two VMs "talk" to a third one running an
SQL database storing the ASSP data and an LDAP server used
to verify the email addresses; the two ASSP VMs send incoming
emails to the backend MTA servers cluster; the outbound email
is sent to either ASSP VM and relayed on the internet through the
local SMTP

Such a config allows to have redundant frontend and backend
servers and may be easily expanded by adding more VMs at
the needed "point" so it also allows a rather good scalability

As you can see, the backend MTAs may be whatever you want;
for sure, if you want to setup a cluster you'll need to pick an MTA
s/w capable of this; otherwise, if you don't want/need such a feature
you may just replace the cluster with a single MTA or setup a VM
active/passive cluster with a single, shared storage and config
