Additional confusion exists because there exist specifications for
short-haul physical (electrical) delivery of DS1 and DS3 signals --
usually for cross-connect purposes -- known as DSX-1 and DSX-3.

These specifications, while predominantly composed of general signal
specifications, also concretely reference the electrical characteristics
of metallic interconnection points, so these are not entirely
"abstract" specifications for a "different type" of DS1 signal. Thus,
they fail to conserve the DSn vs. (Tn, OCn, etc.) conceptual distinction
entirely.

There also dwell, in considerably greater obscurity, standards for
electrically cross-connecting (relatively) low-speed SONET carrier
signals - STSX-1, STSX-3.
