I'm far from an expert with SVN so I have to admit I'm mightily confused
about all the different branches of Asterisk. Is there a place where
this is explained?

I thought trunk was the branch which is closest to being the next
release? In this case 1.4beta ?

In any case, if 1.2.10 is released and it turns out it has a serious new
bug (I'm not saying this is an example of that) it should probably still
be fixed rather than left in for 1.2.11.
