Not really sure about SIP exactly, but for Asterisk 1.0 versions, I know that the Pickup only works with Zaptel channels -- so to use it for any sort of IP channel, IAX for example, you have to use an addon/patch .... google it, 'pickup2' I think it's called ........works well, allows the Pickup command to grab any ZAP or IAX channel
