smartd can be configured at start-up using the configuration file /etc/smartd.conf If you comment out all the drives listed in /etc/smartd.conf then smartd will just start (no 15 min wait). Comment with # at start of line. smartd Is useful because it will send SMART errors to your /var/log/messages http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-Monitoring,_Analysis,_and_Reporting_Technology You can always use smartctl from your CLI. If smartd is taking 15 min to start you might want to check on your drives using smartctl or by checking your logs (/var/logs). You may have a dying hard-drive. Blaine
