Henry,
My first guess would be either diskspace or RAM/swap. When you run top,
hopefully your not using any or much swap. The other is to check your
disk space, sometmes if you have backups running or not deleting logs/vm
you can eventually run out of disk space which then causes teh system
not behave.
Without more info this is where I'd start.
