I use a portable internet router (telus cellular data card on kyrocera router). Send to client site, someone plugs it in, and voila...internet access on demand.
Costs me a bit a month but I use it all the time for my own use, and it's come in handy for several clients that don't want internet access. On another note, the way we used to do it was a basic modem on a windows box with pcanywhere (or if it had linux version, don't know). I don't know if the software is available any more but it worked well. From there, an internal network to ssh or vnc and you could get at anything on your network.
