Martin, We are all Dell, so it was a natural fit for me to put my Asterisk installation on a Dell. Not knowing what to get, I ended up with a PowerEdge 1950, (1) Xeon 5130 (dual core 2GHz), 4GB RAM, PERC SATA RAID w/ (2) 72GB drives, DRAC5 card, and Sangoma A101D PCIx Single PRI card. I figured there was no need for proper SCSI drives, and I think the inexpensive default (nowadays) is for SAS drives. The hard drives are running in RAID 1 (mirror).
I've been using Linux+Dells for many years, I've never had driver issues. Or stability issues for that matter. I've got a 64bit install of Gentoo Linux and it's working fine. I opted for the DRAC card to give me remote management should the system become inoperable. I wanted this thing to be bullet proof and it has been. I'm running about 50 extensions, and CPU load is very low all the time. At the time, the PowerEdge 9xx series didn't offer hotswap drives, and I really wanted, at a minimum, hardware RAID with hotswap drive bays. It's been over a year since I've needed a Dell server, but if they made a single socket 1U server with hardware SAS RAID w/ 2 or even 3 drive slots (maybe 6 drive slots with 2.5" SAS drives??), that should be more than enough. Just adjust your CPU and RAM accordingly. You could blow my configuration out of the water with a quad core CPU and 16GB of RAM if you wanted to :) Hope that helps, but I definitely recommend Linux + Asterisk + Dell + Sangoma -Marc > -----Original Message----- > From: Martin Glazer [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Thursday, June 04, 2009 12:47 PM > To: Asterisk Users Group > Subject: [on-asterisk] Dell server recommendation? > > Hi, > > We normally used our own Intel based servers for Asterisk, however I > have someone looking for a Dell server to go with the rest of their > equipment. > The server will be used for a 50 person Asterisk installation with a > Sangoma dual PRI card. > > Can anyone recommend a particular model of Dell server that they have > used consistently with Asterisk? > I know that a while back there were some issues with > particular models > so I am curious what people have now? > > Thanks > > Martin > > --------------------------------------------------------------------- > To unsubscribe, e-mail: [email protected] > For additional commands, e-mail: [email protected] > --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [email protected] For additional commands, e-mail: [email protected]
