Hi everyone,
I know my email has nothing to do with VoIP, but I thought people
would appreciate to learn about 3G wireless routers since many of us
work on the road all day.
Here's some comments on my quest to connect 3 computers on a single
USB 3G stick:
I first sent a question to this mailing list and receive a lot of
feedback. Thanks everyone for your help.
Since I wanted a secure network using our MAC minis, I wanted some
sort of router to connect to the internet with my 3G USB stick from
Telus.
I received many comments about IPCop and pfsense. I downloaded the
IPCop LiveCD and was able to install it on an embedded platform, but
since the kernel is base on 1.2.4.x, I couldn't use our 3G USB stick
because it requires a system running kernel 1.2.6.x.
I also received suggestions using the NetGear, LinkSYS, DLink and
Cradlepoint. I knew I would get very little support from NetGear,
LinkSYS and DLink, so I decided to go for the CradlePoint at
$129.00+S&H.
The information on their website was very clear, they do support all
major 3G USB sticks including the ones from Telus, Bell Canada and
Rogers.
I ordered the CradlePoint CTR350 (basic model) from a mobile phone
operator in Toronto (ordered online). The transaction went smooth and
I received my unit 3 days later.
To my big surprise, I plugged in my 3G USB stick in the router and the
router automatically recognize my 3G USB stick and I had internet
access within 60 seconds! I was amazed!!!! Then I logged in my router
to tweak the security around since it offered insecure wifi with it's
default config but you still need to enter a password to access the
internet which can prevent people from using your network to surf the
net.
So thank you everyone for all your comments, it was worth it and it
saved me hours of frustration. I can now work from our cottage! (don't
know yet if it's a good idea, but I'm sure our customers will
appreciate it).
Hope to see you all at the next TAUG meeting in Toronto.
Cheers.
Stephan Monette.
