Thanks everyone...

To clarify, we currently have a rack at Beanfield at 151 that we have been
happy with... application/web hosting and Hosted PBX, amongst others, is what
we have there... Cogent cold called us and has been aggressive at pricing us to
move to their racks at 151 or North York... The move would have to be to be
worth it... the idea of switching subnets upsets my stomach but it has
triggered some long needed internal discussions and is being seriously
considered. Really, I would love to get Beanfield quality or better and a
reasonably priced SIP Trunk provider in the same room or building.

We have also found their business internet connection pricing to be fairly
aggressive and looking at them for a few clients at the moment... they seem to
focus on themselves as "Not Cheap", but I'm not sure what that means exactly...
but I am taking the grand tour shortly.

I would ultimately like to get a few providers that I can present to clients
that offer internet, Virtual Trunks/SIP, etc... that are alternatives to
Rogers/Bell/Telus... The client's best interest is what I have in mind.

Regards,

Chuck

Subject: Re: [on-asterisk] Any feedback on Cogent Datacenters (151 + North
York) and Cogent Internet Connections?

Cogent over the last decade has made a pretty good come back on there
reputation. Bill made a good comment on that already.

Its a broad question your asking though Chuck, what are you looking at hosting
or doing ?

If your looking at cost effective look at ovh or soyoustart, they include the
servers for less than space+power at most data-centers, don't ever use them for
critical voice though. (great for web stuffs/mail) they are 3 9's .

Digital oceans and vultr have 5$ ssd based high performance vm's these honestly
will fit most types of applications fine (unless you have a client that wants
to host windows *shudder*)

Data-centers are starting to make less and less sense, the market is
ridiculously competitive now.

If you are going into a data-center, look at the applications and services you
are going to run. If its run of the mill, look at the 3rd parties, you'll
mitigate your costs and headaches of maintaining your own stuff.

If its going to be some die hard setup, you will probably want to venture
further down the rabbit hole and get a bgp asn and multiple internet up streams
to give you better redundancy and routing options. You will also want to get on
a peering ring like TORIX or several of the others. You will rarley find direct
access to these at single carrier branded colos.

ok that was my 2 cent rant. Happy hunting.

Philip Mullis
