OK, well it's definatly disk space related. I managed to clear up a meg of space then ran the command again. It ate the disk space, managed about a minute of the track and then barfed with this error;
sox: Can't rewind output file to rewrite Sun header. It didn't release the disk space to me which begs the question; what did it write and where?
