If I had to guess, it is probably because you have incorrect console
settings (when the kernel starts, output is redirected to some other
port). Look at the console= line in the boot config file and make sure
it is what you need for your device.
You may also need to edit /etc/inittab and make sure that getty is
starting on the correct port.
