I use it on Suse Linux, but with a non-Suse "grub". I took grub from a
CentOS installation because I had some problems with the Suse grub
version (it didn't want to detect/offer hd1 where my usb scsi reader is

Since we are talking about a development environment, I would not spend
too much effort on maintaining support for many different distros. We
all know, it works fine on CentOS, CentOS is freely available and
everyone can use a CentOS system to build a customized Astlinux version.

If you don't like CentOS, you could still use it only for building
Astlinux (use XEN or VMware or old hardware or separate boot partition
on the main workstation, etc.)
