John,

I believe what Philip posted was meant to be sarcasm (which he confirmed
before I could send this message).

I've been after Kris to do a new release since November. For several
reasons that has not happened. I'm trying to do unofficial released
based on what's in trunk (although I haven't updated those recently
either--hope to do so later today and will post when I do).

One of the things holding back the official releases is the image
format. All officially released images to date have been ext2 disk
images which must be installed to a CF (or other media) via dd. For
over a year now, Kris has been using images which are squashfs based and
are alot easier to manage. These are booted via a boot loader called
"runnix". Runnix is really a micro version of Linux that has the sole
purpose of locating and loading the target image. It's powerful and
allows you to more easily upgrade from one version to the next. You
would simple copy the image files to the "os" directory on the runnix
prepared compact flash. (I've tried to document most of this on the
http://www.astlinux.org web page.)

Since these images are currently squashfs (but could easily be ext2 or
several other formats), the content of the images is not modifiable
without using unionfs. (well you could modify the files, but all
changes would be lost at reboot if you're not using unionfs).

I guess I'd like to hear end user's opinions on the image format. I'm
particularly interested in the opinions of those who have actually tried
using the runnix based images.

Someone mentioned adding a -dev list. It's probably a good idea. Kris,
can you take care of adding that on the Source Forge page?

Regards,

Darrick
