I use the net5501 images on an Alix board. This is the best one to use and sends console to the serial port.
If you build your own image from source then you can select to build either net5501 or generic with serial console enabled. Personally I have opted to build generic because then I can have a single image that I can test in vmware prior to installing on the Alix board.
