Be sure to backup your current Asterisk (1.4) configuration, and then 
read through the various UPGRADE, Changes and ChangeLog files which 
are in the Asterisk 1.8.x sources or here:

You need to make some changes in your dialplan, and copy some of the 
new config files from "/stat/etc/asterisk".
