BINGO!!

It works. The old file was corrupted. It was not a text file anymore. I am
using a USB key to run astlinux, it got corrupted after only like 4 months
of use.

After the reboot when I upgraded to 0.7.10, i had corrupted disk errors so
I ran fsck to fix em. I thought everything was ok and that it should not be
related to the DNS issues.

Lesson is to use high quality storage for critical applications.
