BINGO!! It works. The old file was corrupted. It was not a text file anymore. I am using a USB key to run astlinux, it got corrupted after only like 4 months of use.
After the reboot when I upgraded to 0.7.10, i had corrupted disk errors so I ran fsck to fix em. I thought everything was ok and that it should not be related to the DNS issues. Lesson is to use high quality storage for critical applications. Thank you very much for the fast fix. Much appreciated.
