If it is a practical swap for you, I would try testing an Atom Jetway board (or 
similar) with either the geni586 or geni586-serial console firmware.

The net5501 may not be the issue, but it would not surprise me if it was.

Here is a link of a discussion exactly related to your question, albeit 3 years 
ago, AstLinux has improved since, but the net5501 has not...

Provided your span= is correct, a Dual Core Atom may be an improvement.
