Im actually thinking that I will just use an ALIX or APU appliance and be done 
with it. It will certainly provide a bit of flexibility within the solutions.

How about configuring the Mikrotik as an OpenVPN server using TCP and then 
configure AstLinux to be both an OpenVPN server using UDP (as you have) and an 
OpenVPN client using TCP to the Mikrotik.

Pushing the proper routes in the OpenVPN configs will be needed to get everyone 
talking.
