Subject: Missouri Assistive Power UP Conference & Expo, April 2 & 3, 2012
Greetings from Missouri Assistive Technology! Power Up 2012 features a wealth of sessions to enhance the daily living for individuals that are blind or low vision. This year's conference features an array of state and nationally known experts in the field of assistive technology and related topics. This year, we offer four sessions that will provide individuals with practical and applicable knowledge. This email gives you a firsthand look at the sessions that might impact you day to day. We hope to see you on April 2nd and 3rd at Power UP! Assistive Technology for Blind Low Vision - Power UP Sessions for Monday Right off the bat we have an Interactive session with Dave Wilkinson of Nanopac titled, "Interactive AT: Constructing Individual Solutions." Assistive Technology evolves quickly and there are more choices than ever. Dave helps navigate through the new technology in constructing customized solutions with your assistive technology tool box. In this session you will get a chance to try your hand at assembling the building blocks in your AT solutions with a wide variety of products including the latest in video magnifiers, screen readers, Braille displays, GPS solutions and more. A must to attend! After a morning break, join us in the session presented by Kevin Hollinger, "Strategies and Resources to Access AIM." Kevin will explore Accessible Instructional Material access. This session will include a brief overview of AIM, how to secure AIM, how to access or use AIM, and strategies for utilizing AIM in the educational, recreational and community settings. The following assistive technologies may be reviewed and/or demonstrated: Victor Soft software; ReadHear software; Victor Stratus and Vibe; Victor Stream; BookPort; BookNote; iPad apps; and a Wolfner Digital Player. Grab a colleague to attend a consecutive session with Dr. Cary Supalo titled, "Science Access Technology Solutions for the Blind." Dr. Supalo will introduce the Talking LabQuest solution. The device, which collects and stores scientific data and reads 20 descriptors for each element, is now available on the market. This session will cover how students can use this device in a class lab. Assistive Technology for Blind Low Vision - Power UP Sessions for Tuesday Bright and early Tuesday morning, Denny Huff presents on, "Dragon Naturally Speaking, JAWS & J-Say - Triple Play." Denny reviews how J-Say Pro 9 brings together Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional version 11.5, from Nuance, and JAWS For Windows version 12, from Freedom Scientific. Although the product integrates these two applications, it offers the User an easy to understand interface enabling interaction with the computer using natural language and easy to remember and understand vocabulary. Missouri Assistive Technology staffer, David Baker wrapped up the remaining two sessions with a duo of topics. First he will cover, "Enhancing Access: Effective Apps for Low Vision Individuals." He will review iDevices use and value for individuals with low vision. This session will explore apps for magnification, identification, navigation and print access have. This session will identify and discuss the array of apps available. Grab a cup of coffee and round out the conference with David's session on, "What Did He Say? Effective Note Taking with Assistive Technology." Jotting notes at work in a meeting, at a conference or in a class takes attention away from the speaker. To effectively take notes the User must be an active listener to new and often unfamiliar information, transcribe that information quickly enough to keep pace with the speaker and decide how to organize the material to reflect the relationship stated. It is exhausting just jotting down that last sentence. Is it any wonder students struggle to take good notes in class? AT solutions exist! The Livescribe Pen and Noteability are but two examples of new and exciting assistive technologies that are making it easier for a User to capture, retain and study recorded notes.
