Because:
a) It's not possible to compare an atom:id with a rel=self link. It's perfectly possible for the URI in atom:id to be the same as the rel=self in a different feed (unlikely, but possible). It's also possible for the same feed to switch from having an atom:id with one value, to having a rel=self with the a different value.

c) rel=self offers no guarantee of uniqueness


Unless you can explain how multiple different feeds can be obtained via one URI

As I explained on a thread last week, rel=self doesn't necessarily correspond with the address the feed is being served from. Stop making this mistake.
