I presume any "atom:modified" element would have to be incremented every time any change was made, so this wouldn't be an option.
I prefer a solution where the originating point of the entry puts the current time in a new element when it generates the atom:entry. Then it's easy to work out which is the newest version, in a way atom:updated doesn't allow.
