it built and installed fine on RHEL5 here.

Maybe you used libtool from rhel6?

Anyway, a newer version has been released:

http://people.atrpms.net/~pcavalcanti/srpms/mpg123-1.13.1-13.el5.src.rpm

Can you try building it with the appropriate libtool?
