Hello guys,
thank you very much for your hints. I got emacs-auctex-13.1 to build at least 
- was my fault, I had had upgraded to a more recent texlive - distribution as 
the one that had been shipped with openSUSE-15.6.
More recent variants do not build - but I will have to upgrade to 16.0 in the 
near future anyways so I will not tinker with that any more.
Thanks to both of you for the comments on my question - the problem sat right 
in front of the screen (as usual :-))
