It never worked to begin with. The only thing it was good for was crashing 
your player. The mpg123 distribution as used by audacious is legally 
encumbered and thus cannot be considered free software. We switched to 
madplug as it has a more correct decoding curve and do not intend to ever 
switch back to mpg123. Additionally, mpg123 has several security holes 
that have put us in a position where we do not wish to audit the decoder.

So we removed it.

While I sympathise with your needs for such a feature, I cannot in good 
faith provide an mpg123-based decoder that has been updated to the new 
callback-based API that Audacious 1.3 and later use for the reasons above. 
Moreover, mad is a superior decoding engine for most users.

Additionally, you are the first one to mention that it has been removed. 
As such, I'm going to assume that nobody found it useful enough anyway.

Audacious 1.4 does not support multiple instances at all. While that 
config setting still presently exists in the master hg repo, it does not 
have any effect.
