To float again what James said on 21st January in response to Thomas,
the idea is to not to translate the main site by hand, but let users choose 
their language from the Google Translate menu and have Google show 
their machine translation. 

We are assuming this is somewhat acceptable for the main site whose 
content is mostly non-technical. 

We're hoping that translators freed up from translating the main site
will consider if they can instead help us with the much greater priority of 
translating the the highly technical material in the FAQ. The FAQ (which was
once part of the main site) is now an integral part of Audacity Manual,
running on MediaWiki software:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/FAQ .

At present, the translation mechanism for the Manual is merely to 
create a new page where the page suffix shows the locale. There is 
no integration with the sidebar which remains in English, and there 
is only a manual system of linking to pages in other languages using 
country flags:

The Spanish pages in Audacity Manual remain quite close to completion  
thanks to the great efforts of Richard von Moltke. If we can get more 
translators able to complete translation of the FAQ (and of the pages 
the FAQ links to), then we would be able to invest time in a proper 
conversion process from HTML to PDF for the localised FAQ's, and
make those PDF's available for download. 

The reason PDF's are seen as important is that many English users 
are requesting them due to greater ease of searching and printing 
than HTML.  

Are the translators here interested to work with translating the Wiki
documentation in that way? 

Or are there better methods of translating on MediaWiki like  
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Translate 

and does anyone here have experience setting up and operating that 
extension?  

I don't know much about Transifex Live, but it looks like it machine
translates 
pages then lets you save edits of those automated translations. Is that 
system viable for Wiki translations, and if so what support does Transifex
Live have for producing PDF's? 

In short the question is - how can we best move forward on translating
documentation (or a useful subset of it)?  Clearly there is a demand. We 
often get asked for translated documentation in one language or another,
and these are usually the languages where we already have an active 
translation of Audacity.
