Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

Eureka! I've figured out how to effectively play any of the dos 3.3 Eamon adventures. It's a bit cumbersome, but it can be done! First of all, thanks go to Jaybird for posting the new eamon folder with the talking main hall and to Trenton for finding the zipped collection. Now, the best way to go about this is to create an eamon folder within your apple folder where you should extract all dsk files found in the doss33 folder within the zipped archive. This is so you don't confuse the non-bootable games with your bootable disks found in the disks folder especially if you start with the apple front end launcher. You should also copy the eaglist.htm file found at the top level of the archive to your new eamon folder because this is the key to finding your games. Now, put the eamontlk.dsk file in your disks folder and boot it. When you get through registration and press 1 at the main hall to go on an adventure, you'll get a prompt to insert the adventure disk in dr ive 1 and press c to continue. Follow the ReadMe file instructions for switching disks. Just don't use c as your state key. Example, hit scroll-lock+insert, then shift+f7, then a, then escape to power off and save in state a. Now, suppose you wanted to play Jungles of Vietnam. You'd consult the eaglist file to discover that this game is 59 in the list, so the disk you want is d3_059.dsk. Get to a command prompt and change directories to your apple folder. Example, "cd \apple2" Don't type the quotes. Type "mess apple2ee -flop1 eamon\d3_059.dsk -state a" to power back up where you left off. Press C to begin your adventure. The slightly trickier part comes when your adventure ends or you are killed because at this point, you are asked to make sure your main hall disk is in and then press any key to continue. As I posted before, the trouble is that it may get cranky when you assign your state key. So, the solution is to enter Textalker's review mo de by pressing control+l. Now, power off and save your state by pressing scroll lock+insert, f7, a, escape. While in review mode, Textalker will intercept that a as a command to start review at line a rather than having apple try to load your main hall disk. You should be back at command prompt, so type "mess apple2ee -flop1 disks\eamontlk.dsk -state a" and press return. Hit spacebar to insure you are still in review mode. Press escape to exit review, and then hit any key as instructed. You should be returned to the main hall without incident. Hope this helps, and happy gaming.
