But yes, Red vs Blue is a fanfic in that it's a loose prequel to the creation of the Spartans. Fair warning the mike quality is scratchy in the first season unless you can find the remastered episodes of season 1.
The first 5 seasons are comedy with a slowly thickening plot revolving around the red and blue squads in a game of capture the flag. It's treated seriously by their command, but the rest of the groups are too busy with infighting and quirky in their personalities that it devolves into bickering and broken equipment.
During the two miniseries and from season 6 onwards, they get more involved by the remnants of Project Freelancer that uses experimental AI pared with freelance soldiers that is strongly implied to lead to the creation of Spartans later down the line.
