Re: book suggestion for someone who was blown away by wheel of time and th
Yeah, I don't care for synthesized reading, but it is better than not being able to read the book at all. What I really need is a decent stand alone text to speech DAISY book reader with a decent voice similar to Eloquence. Preferably one that can also play the NLS digital books and MP3 files.
I think that one of the major reasons why I liked Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn so much is because Simon and Miriamelle weren't these shining heros that could do no wrong. They both had flaws, made mistakes, and sometimes acted stupidly. There were times when Simon was very awkward and while Miriamelle didn't share Simon's awkwardness, she was at times a very sheltered little princess and so very naive. but it made them very likable because it made them very human. They were easy to identify with.
Shadowmarch was good, but at the end I thought, well, that might have been better if it was only three books long. It seemed to me like somewhere in the middle, the stor y was getting stretched a little too thin. And while I rooted for Berik and Briony, there were times when I wished that they were more like Simon and Miriamelle. And some things in Shadowmarch, I thought went a lottle too far, such as the living god and his slaves that always laid down in front of him so he could walk on them to prevent his feet from ever touching the ground. To me that was rather silly.
