I think I bought the metal blade to do the most damage. Though you also may want to save up for the slingshot as it's a great way to get rid of the slimes who seems to have extremely high defense (The slingshot's armor piercing blows will help however). That and for taking out the mad horses from a distance as getting smashed by them because of a miss timed slash hurts (a lot, I was getting hit for 400 damage sometimes)
