Re: When is the last time anyone has read a braille book?

All right everyone, here we go!

First, would people quit moaning and groaning about how braille is so important and vital? Yes, I've heard this everywhere. Do I think braille is a useful tool? You bet! However, I'm getting sick of blindness organizations and education agencies moaning and harping about how vital braille is. At the same time, these people are willing to use state grants to buy these devices for individuals? What the fuck is with that? How can you go around saying that braille is so important, yet allow these companies to monopolize and overprice a technology that is supposedly vital for the blind? Why are the NFB, ACB and god only knows what other organizations simply sitting around doing nothing about this? I thought these were supposed to serve the interests of the blind. Well, now you know why I despise every last one of them. Why can't we, the consumers, go out and purchase these "essential" devices for literacy on our own? Why do we have to go begging state agencies to pay for these things? I seriously don't get it. I get that the market is small, but this is just disgusting! Again, I'm not saying braille is bad, I just think we're approaching this in the completely wrong way.

If this $1000 screen of braille ever comes out, it's going to change everything! Braille books will become obsolete because you can simply write information to a screen and the refreshable screen of braille characters would instantly update to reflect your changes. All these greedy companies that sell single-line displays will either have to change their tune or go bust. I have high hopes for this device, but who knows. Only time will tell.

As for math, I would have loved to do it on my Mac. Unfortunately, I have found it very difficult with speech or even the current single-line displays. Besides, I'll be out of school in June and this load of garbage isn't going to matter. I stand with Dark. If things don't change very soon, braille is going to become obsolete. Hell, it already is. Do I like that? Not really, because I recognize braille as a tool. Still, I don't know. All I know is that something needs to change, and it needs to happen soon. I also know that these ridiculous blindness organizations are going to do nothing about it. Instead, they're passing stupid bullcrap declarations like that one telling Apple to make every single app in the app store accessible. Are you kidding me? You think making a drawing app accessible is going to actually work? Why aren't you people working with Microsoft to make a talking Windows installer or making a cheaper braille display? Why are you coming up with stupid proposals? Anyway, this has turning into a rant and going slightly off the conversation. I'm done for now.
