Personally I'm a huge fan of prometheus even though I haven't played in a while. The community is so nice and helpful and it's easy to get started. I tried both miriani and star conquest a long time ago and couldn't figure either of them out. It wasn't until later that I realized a lot of the space muds use a lot of the same commands. I think that's why it was so easy to learn prometheus.
Other than prometheus though space muds aren't really my thing I like the traditional fantasy mud like alter aeon. Their a little easier to understand.
As far as simulators I'd guess most space muds have them to teach you how to do things. Go to a starting place like a docking platform and type train or training this should give you a list of things to practice. This might not work on star conquest but it works on prometheus and like I said they use similar commands so give it a try.
