If you're throwing the card directly into your macs sd card reader, that's probably the problem. Most sd card readers that are built in, and yes, apple is included in this, have some of the worst speeds - ever. I bought a cheap $5.00 USB chinese made sd to USB adapter off ebay, and I get well over 20 mb/s. The sd card I used was the same in both my 2010 macbook pro ( and I just used it in my nearly brand new Dell Inspiron 13 the other day).
Your mileage may vary, though. Maybe it is the sd to micro sd adapter.
