It could be due to the faulty cable. Which cable are you using? It should just work fine. I have connected mine a several times and I still remember the first time I connected, it detected a controller, installed the driver and notified me that an Xbox controller is now connected to my laptop and I was using it with no problem.
Check your cable I'd say.
