For combo boxes, try going into focus mode with nvda+space, then tabbing away from and back onto the list. This is a bit flaky. I also just tried this again and now it looks as though they now work much better, so I would also suggest you try out the very latest release of NVDA (2017.4RC as of this post) because it looks like some fixes were implemented.
Glad you're enjoying Chrome. If you're concerned about privacy it's worth mentioning that you don't have to sign into your Google account to use it. You can also turn off browser history on your Google privacy settings if you just want your bookmarks synced. If that isn't enough, because the Chromium/blink engine that powers Chrome is open-source, you don't have to use the official Google Chrome app. There's apps like Ungoogle Chromium, which keeps the stock UI, as well as apps like Vivaldi and Opera that are their own thing and have additional features like a reader view or built-in ad blocking
