The reputation and XP earned for kills is a combination of the zombie type, the weapon used, and the map it took place on. The harder the map, the more XP you earn (usually). The less powerful the weapon, the more points you get (usually), and the stronger the zombie the more points you get.
The shootout zones are areas of the mall, in map 5, where the raiders and safe zone population are exchanging gunfire. The safe zone and outpost stories help explain the situation, so I recommend reading those once you get there. If you are walking around in any of the shootout zones, the raiders take shots at you and can occasionally hit you. Getting hit with one of their guns is no joke, and should be avoided unless you have some good armor on.
The mall can be a bit confusing, so I'll try to stop in later to describe it. I'm a bit short on time at the moment.
